Athletics at Holy Names

It all started with basketball. In the decades that followed its invention in 1891 (just east of here in Springfield, Massachusetts), the sport took this school by storm. Today, athletics are a major part of this institution’s identity.

Our athletic programs teach students physical and mental skills, self-discipline, and sportsmanship while motivating athletes to strive for excellence. Experienced coaches prepare their teams for competition while helping individual athletes progress to the next level in their athletic development. We have an impressive record of championships, especially for a small school. We provide a supportive and competitive atmosphere so that our student-athletes flourish and grow, and we boast a higher level of involvement by students that is almost unmatched.

Students at Academy of the Holy Names formed the school’s first Amateur Athletic Association (A.A.A.) in 1912, and through the middle part of the twentieth century (when athletics for women was discouraged nationally), sponsored one of only interscholastic competitions held at any girls’ school, anywhere, a semi-annual rivalry with its sister school in Rome, New York.

1913 Academy of the Holy Names Amateur Athletic Association

TODAY: nearly 3/4 of our students participate in one or more of the 12 athletic programs offered.

Academy of the Holy Names competes in the Colonial Council League with member schools of Section 2 of the NYSPHSAA (New York State Public High School Athletic Association).

Junior varsity and varsity sports teams are comprised of students in grades 9 through 12, with consideration offered select students in grades 7 and 8.* NYSPHSAA is the state-wide
organization of schools responsible for governing interscholastic athletic activities and programs for boys and girls in grades 7-12.

*According to NYSPHSSA rules for all schools, 6th-grade students are not allowed to compete on JV.
